Week 2

At the start of the week we continued learning lines with the intent to be off script by the end of the week. Outside of rehearsals we were tasked with the creation of a presentation on Caryl Churchill's life alongside the play Love and Information. This helped me as it gave me a wider understanding of the play and allowed me to think about how and why Caryl wrote the play.

This especially helped me to figure out the concept for the final scene that I was going to perform which is titled 'Facts'. Together with my scene partner we decided to take this scene in a very different way to what our teacher had recommended, which was to make it into a game show. We decided to create a student-teacher relationship between the two characters as this seemed like an interesting path to explore.

We decided on this as there was a line in the scene that we were struggling on as it had thrown us for a loop. As the title suggests, most of the scene is about knowing random facts, which would work well in a game show setting but the line: 'Do you love me?' did not fit with this concept. Therefore we decided on a student-teacher relationship as this is something that people would be able to relate to.

The way that I developed the scene 'Facts' is similar to how I developed the scene 'Fan' during week one. Once again I took the 'who', 'where', and 'what' approach to start my characterization. My character was a British schoolboy called Joseph O'Brien who is sixteen-year-old and slightly troubled. Because of this he requires extra attention from his teacher who has developed a liking and feelings towards Joseph. This relationship shines through during the scene as the teacher randomly asks him if he loves her whilst quizzing him for an upcoming test. The 'where' in this particular scene is a classroom because this is where the characters are most likely to be found together. The 'what' of this scene is that the teacher is in love with the student but the student doesn't reciprocate her feelings.

After I developed this scene, I shifted my focus more towards my directorial responsibilities and began or work on the rest of my cast's scenes. I helped my cast by understanding their vision of the scene and assisting in bringing it to life. The way that I can improve my directorial skills, which includes delegation, next time is by asking for help from other cast members with directorial skills as well as the teachers.

Key Strength:My biggest strength this week was devising which is the ability to come up with ideas for scenes and being able to convey these ideas to others and applying them. To keep this as a strength I will continue to practice creativity in every opportunity that it given to me.

Key Weakness:My biggest weakness this week was not asking for support when this was needed. Next week I would like to improve this by being more willing to ask and accept help from other members of my group as well as the teachers.
